As a well-trained classical oil painter highly proficient in these respected painting techniques, I strove to learn to create works of excellence that exemplify the traditional disciplines of the golden age of realism. I employ impressionist color theory from my classical training, which applies the use of opposite and complementary colors in delicate, translucent layers the way the human eye actually sees light, reflective color and value.
My study in the classical concealed stroke method of painting builds transparent layers of color over a carefully rendered high contrast, under painting. I would model smooth forms within the composition using soft, pure sable brushes. My objective was to render the artwork with a minimum texture and identifiable strokes of paint. Each complete artwork would have no less than four complete layers of transparent paint over the under-painting. It taught me the importance of depth and texture within my work.
Plein air painting gives me the opportunity to observe how light and atmosphere illuminates a landscape. My training in color theory helps me to understand how to interpret what I see with a brush and pallet knife. My experience in contemporary painting helps me to push those boundaries of beauty and color. |
